Penguin Subtitle Player is distributed as a freeware application, for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Its executable can be extracted directly from a ZIP archive, without going through an installation process. Furthermore, there is no need to install any prerequisite tools and you don't need powerful hardware.
The application comes with a transparent user interface, which has a similar layout to that of a traditional media player. You can load a subtitle file, in SRT, SSA or ASS format, through a browsing option, after which it will start playing right away. The text is displayed in the center of the interface and you can use the available controls to pause and resume it and skip to the next or previous subtitles.
The user interface is set to stay on top of any other window, which makes it easy to keep the subtitles visible when playing a movie. Obviously, you can move and resize the window however you want, to make it more comfortable. It is also possible to decrease or increase its transparency, in its general settings menu, so that the subtitles would blend in perfectly.
Changing the font settings for the subtitles is another possibility. All the options you would expect to find are located in the same configurations menu. You can choose between numerous fonts, increase or decrease the size, change colors and so on. There are not many features to find, but what Penguin Subtitle Player has to offer will definitely satisfy your needs.
